Yahoo Mail Server SMTP & IMAP Settings: 2020 Guide

Yahoo is an Email series that everybody has used in their lifetime. It can be an alternate Email address for a few or the only one for someone. If you have also used the Yahoo Mail services to send or receive an Email, then now you will get to know how things work or to be more specific the Yahoo IMAP Settings. For transferring the mail, there is a setup involved, which helps in smooth functioning. Before diving into more technicalities, we will introduce you with some terminologies to provide you more clarity with Yahoo Mail server settings.

IMAP (Internet Access Message Protocol)
  • IMAP is a short form of Internet Access Message Protocol.
  • IMAP is an Email Protocol used to retrieve the Emails from the receiving server. Yahoo IMAP settings will take care of a proper set up so that the user can receive an Email message hassle-free.
  •  IMAP can not be used for sending Emails, and it only serves as an Email Protocol to receive messages.
  • IMAP settings will allow you to access the Emails through any devices wherever you can log in to your Yahoo account.
  • Internet Access Message Protocol ensures that while reading, the Email should not be stored automatically to your device.
  • IMAP differs from its predecessor POP is a way that POP used to retrieve the messages from the server and then deletes it; hence the Email is only saved to the device or computer to which it is downloaded.
  • IMAP syncs the Emails with the server so that whenever you open your Yahoo Mail Account on any device, it should display the same Email on all the devices.

SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)

SMTP is an abbreviation for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol.

Yes, you guessed it right.

SMTP is an Email Protocol that manages to send the Emails to the server. Simply put, SMTP deals with Email Sending. In the Yahoo Mail server setting, SMTP delivers the Emails from the sender to the server. After that comes the role of SMTP relay; this is a service that forwards the email from the sender’s server to the receiver’s server.SMTP can not be used for receiving Emails. After configuring and setting up IMAP settings, you also need to enter the SMTP settings.
  • Yahoo Mail Server Setting for SMTP (Outgoing Mail)
  • On the Yahoo program’s new account wizard, you need to enter these SMTP settings:
  • Mail SMTP Server: smtp.mail.yahoo.com
  • SMTP Mail Username: Compete Yahoo Email Address
  • Mail SMTP Port: For SSL (465) and TLS (587)
  • Authentication required for Yahoo Mail SMTP SSL: Yes
  • TLS authentication required: Yes (if available)
  • Yahoo Mail SMTP Password: Yahoo Mail Account’s Password

POP (Post Office Protocol)

POP is an older Email standard that downloads the message from the receiving server and then deletes it; hence the Email can be downloaded to a single device. Post Office Protocol or POP should be used when you have an especially designated device for Emails, and you prefer to receive the messages offline.

Otherwise, IMAP is the most suitable option for receiving Emails for accessing Email on multiple devices.
  • Yahoo Mail Settings for POP
  •  You can do these settings for receiving the Emails through POP.

Yahoo is a mail service provider, which executes the operation to send and receive the Emails. While another service provider is a Mail app or email programs like Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird, generally, you will use these email programs, or email climbs to access your inbox or messages. Now you need to do IMAP and SMTP settings in email program account settings.

  • Now visit the “more settings” option in “POP and IMAP”.
  • Further, you need to select “Outgoing Server” and fill the SMTP details.
Now you need to perform the steps for receiving Emails through IMAP/POP. Follow these steps.
  • From the “Toolbar” menu you need to select the “settings” tab.
